In September of 2015, we purchased what is now Abbey Haus at the courthouse steps.

At the time, my husband Jason and I didn’t have a grand plan for what we would do with an old church—but I saw something in it. Beneath the years of wear and uncertainty was a beautiful historic property with incredible character and so much possibility. I had a feeling that if we let it go, we would always regret it.

So we took a chance.

For the first five years, our focus was simply on preserving the property—making the necessary improvements and repairs to protect the building and ensure that this special piece of Wilmington history would remain standing for generations to come.

Then, little by little, the vision began to take shape.

Over the next five years, in between our own busy careers and everyday life, we slowly began transforming the property into the place we had started imagining. There was never a rush and never a desire to make it look like everything else. We wanted Abbey Haus to feel collected rather than designed—to celebrate the history and soul of the original building while creating something unexpected within its walls.

Much of the inspiration came from our own travels around the world—the places we’ve stayed, the cities we’ve wandered, the details we’ve remembered, and that unmistakable feeling you get when you discover somewhere truly special.

Those experiences found their way back to Wilmington and into Abbey Haus.

Today, the property is a collection of spaces inspired by some of the places we love, layered within the architecture and character of a historic 1945 church. Original details live alongside modern design, old brick meets unexpected color, and each room has its own personality and story.

The Abbey Haus has been more than a decade in the making.

It is a labor of love, a reflection of our travels, and our interpretation of what a stay can be when you create a place that’s truly one of a kind.
